Connect a card terminal

How to register a card terminal or a phone with CheckoutX to your till, using the 6-digit code on its screen.

A card terminal is registered with the 6-digit code on its own screen. That works for SurfMini, SurfPrint, SurfTouch and SurfPad, and for a phone with the CheckoutX app (Android, or Tap to Pay on iPhone). Until a terminal is registered, card payments are demo payments and nothing is charged.

Get the code

Switch the terminal on, or open CheckoutX on the phone. The first screen shows a 6-digit code. It changes every 90 seconds, so type it while it is on the screen.

Register it in the builder

  1. Open Go live and find Take payments.
  2. Press Register on the terminal row (Add when one is already there).
  3. Type the code under 6-digit code from the terminal's screen, give it a name under Name it, and press Register.

Prefer to scan? Press Show a QR instead, then tap the QR icon on the terminal's registration screen and scan it.

Register it on the till

A manager or owner can do it from the till itself:

  1. Open Settings and press Add a terminal.
  2. Type the Code on the terminal's screen and a Name for this terminal.
  3. Press Register and use here.

On a phone, install CheckoutX first (iPhone or Android). If the till is open on that same phone, Register this phone does it in one go.

"This terminal is not on your account yet"

Sometimes a brand-new terminal has to be activated for your shop once. The till then asks for its serial number:

  1. Type the serial number from the label (it often starts with S or 29).
  2. Type the code on the screen right now: if 90 seconds have passed, read the new one.
  3. Press Activate and register (in the builder: Register).

After that, the terminal registers with its code like any other. You never use the serial number for anything else.

Which device uses which terminal

Each tablet or phone running the till remembers its own terminal. To change it, tap the terminal badge in the till's header and pick another. A phone with CheckoutX can take payments sent from any till in your shop, so the till on the counter tablet and the phone that takes the card do not have to be the same device.

After you switch to real payments

Register the terminal again once the till takes real payments. The one you tried things with belongs to the test account. See Publish and go live.
