Use a barcode scanner

How to sell by scanning barcodes, which scanners work, and how to give your products their barcodes.

A barcode scanner adds a product to the ticket as soon as you scan it. The till works with any scanner that acts like a keyboard, by USB or Bluetooth: it types the code and presses Enter. Most counter scanners work this way out of the box.

Set it up

  1. Give each product its code. In the builder, open Products, open a product and fill in Barcode (EAN). The Article number (SKU) works for scanning too.
  2. Make sure the Sale screen has a search box. The retail template has one. If yours does not, ask the assistant to "add a search box for scanning", or add Search from Add on the canvas.
  3. In Features, under Shop extras, switch on Barcode scanner. The search box then shows a barcode icon and says it is for scanning.
  4. Connect the scanner to the tablet or computer running the till, like a keyboard.

On the till

  1. Tap the search box once so the cursor is in it.
  2. Scan. A product with exactly that barcode or article number goes straight onto the ticket, and the box clears for the next scan.
  3. A product with an open price or sold by weight asks for the price or the amount first, just as when you tap it.

If nothing matches, the till says No exact match. Pick a product from the grid. Check that the product has the right barcode under Products, and that the change is published.

Good to know

  • You can also type a product name or number in the same box and press Enter.
  • Scanning counts as using the till, so it does not lock in the middle of a busy queue.
  • A phone's camera is not used as a scanner by the till.
