Getting started
Questions about getting started
Short answers to the questions owners ask most before and while setting up their till.
Can I try it without real money?
Yes. Until you switch to real payments under Go live, the till takes demo payments and says so at the top of the screen. Nothing is charged, so you can ring up as many test sales as you like.
Do I need to buy new hardware?
Not to start. The till runs in the browser on a tablet, phone or computer you already have, and a phone with the CheckoutX app can be your first card terminal. When you want a dedicated terminal or printer, pick it under Features, Card terminals. See Connect a card terminal.
Can it look like the till I use today?
Yes. Send the assistant screenshots of your current till and it builds the closest match: layout, colours and products. Then point out what is different. See Build with the assistant.
Is there a password?
No. You sign in with your email: we send you a link that works once and expires in an hour. Your staff sign in on the till with a PIN instead.
Can I change my till's address later?
Yes. Click Address in the steps along the top of the workspace and choose a new name. Your cashiers then open the till at the new address.
Does every change go live straight away?
Once your till has an address, yes: every saved version goes live there, including the ones the assistant makes. If something is wrong, press Undo on the assistant's reply or Roll back in Version history.
Who can apply for real payments?
Only an owner of the till, because it decides whose bank account the money goes to. Editors can change and publish everything else. See Give your team access.
Can a tablet till and a phone terminal work together?
Yes. A phone with CheckoutX takes card payments sent from any till in your shop, so the tablet at the counter and the phone that takes the card can be different devices.
What if the till cannot do something I need?
Ask the assistant anyway. It builds the closest thing and lists what is not in the till yet. Press Request it, and getpos builds the most-asked pieces first.
What happens if the internet goes down?
The till keeps taking cash and syncs when it is back online. Card payments need the terminal online. See The till is offline.
